Playing with Style
How to add variety to your long form with genre

Kelly and Dan have been performing and directing literary-inspired improvisation for decades and with each new production tools and skills are developed to not only serve the specific genre but also can be used in other styles and even non-genre improv. This class is about using those tools, tropes, and techniques of great writers to aid and abet how to improvise narrative. This class is helpful to all improvisers regardless of playing genre or not.

Kelly Bashar 
KELLY was the woman everyone loved to hate when she played Martin Freeman’s wife Pearl Nygaard in the Golden Globe and Emmy-winning hit miniseries Fargo on FX. Some of her other favorite screen credits include Scorpion, Speechless, Gilmore Girls, and Parks and Recreation. Kelly appeared off Broadway in TWO’s A CROWD. On the west coast, she has performed at The Broad Stage, Wallis Annenberg Center, Gary Marshall Theatre, Laguna Playhouse, and The Ford Amphitheater.  VO highlights include Smallfoot and VIDEO PALACE for Shudder. Kelly is also a writer and one of the credits she is most proud of is being the co-writer of, (and portraying “Pippin” in), the award winning play Fellowship! The Musical Parody of “The Fellowship of the Ring” – which won NYMF, LA Weekly, and Saturn awards. Kelly is a company member of the critically acclaimed IMPRO THEATRE and is a highly sought after Instructor and Director of unscripted theatre. 

Dan O’Connor 
Dan has been performing, directing, producing, and teaching improvisation professionally since 1986. He has performed thousands of shows with LA Theatresports and Impro Theatre. Dan performed in the Improbable Theatre’s production of Keith Johnstone’s Lifegame (off-Broadway) and the Spike television series of the same name.  

Other improv credits include: the long-running Wrought Irony at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles, Pulp Playhouse at the HBO Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, and as a guest star with The Second City at the Murphy’s Cat Laughs Festival in Kilkenny, Ireland, Theatre 99 in Charleston, New York New York in Las Vegas, The Groundlings Cookin’ with Gas and Crazy Uncle Joe Show, Unexpected Productions in Seattle, OFF THE WALL at the Improv and the Danny O’Connor Christmas Show at the Comedy Central Stage.

He has taught and directed at the Yes And Festival in New York, The Lighten Up Theatre Fest in Kansas City, the Calgary and Vancouver International Improvisation Festivals, the MOMENT! Festival in Vienna, TORN in Hamburg, the Charleston Comedy Festival, the Big Stinkin’ Improv Festival and the Out of Bounds festival both in Austin, and the ITI Conferences MITICO in Milan, the Dubai Fringe, and Improv Ecology in Vancouver.

Dan has co-authored two books with Jeff Katzman about using improvisation to lead a more happy and engaged life both published by North Atlantic Books and distributed by Penguin Random House
